As the years go by, furniture gets damaged. Often, it is more a question of aesthetics than functionality, and we decide to replace the furniture in our dining room or kitchen to give it a different touch.

The question is, what do we do with the furniture we replace? How can we get rid of it? Can we throw it in the bin? Should we take it to a recycling centre?

Below, we give you some recycling tips for used furniture.

What should I do to recycle my used furniture?

The main alternatives for recycling used furniture are:

Take them to a recycling centre or an eco-park

Call a specialized company.

If your used furniture could still have a “second life,” you can donate it to a Foundation or an NGO. In this case, the furniture must be in good condition and functional.

Sale to individuals

Recycling used furniture is a trend, and more and more people are choosing to buy and sell it. However, in order to sell it to Used furniture buyers in Dubai, it must also be in good condition.

This option is the least optimal for those who recycle used furniture, although it can be valid if you do not want to get rid of your old belongings for the moment.

Recycling used furniture: what the law says

In most Dubai municipalities and cities, furniture is not permitted to be taken out onto the street to be collected by the garbage truck. Municipal ordinances relating to urban cleaning usually set out how to recycle used furniture. Other national and regional regulations refer to achieving the objectives of reduction, reuse, recycling, and recovery and promoting less polluting technologies in waste disposal.

This ordinance also states that, for optimal recycling of used furniture, the service user must deposit it on the public street “in front of his/her entrance and at the time indicated to him/her the furniture and belongings that must be removed.” For each notice, these furniture and belongings may be collected in a maximum of 5 units or packages “whose total volume may not exceed five cubic meters, and whose weight will not exceed 50 kg per package”.

How is used furniture treated in a recycling plant?

Furniture often takes up a lot of space. Recycling it at recycling centres or using the services of specialized companies reduces the volume of landfills, where it will take decades to decompose.

Furthermore, if this waste is not treated correctly, it can become a breeding ground for pests and dirt. In the event of a fire, used furniture stored in landfills can cause or fuel fires.

The Used Furniture in Ajman is mostly wood, but some incorporate other materials (metal, fibres, plastics, etc.). Therefore, the recycling process of used furniture is carried out in three phases:

  • Classification according to materials (wood, metal, mattresses, etc.).
  • Separation of improper materials. It separates the different raw materials of the same piece of furniture.
  • Compaction or crushing for recycling.

Wood from recycled used furniture can be used for:

  • Chipboard is manufactured (made from glued wood chips).
  • Energy production.
  • Compost making.
  • Sawdust production.

At MAX USED FURNITURE, we centralize the collection of bulky furniture and the recycling of mattresses, and we give them a specific and specialized treatment. If you have any questions about what to do with your old furniture, please get in touch with us.
